Old MacDonald’s Farm in the Black Hills is the perfect place to get your kids outside to enjoy nature. There are plenty of things to do and learn on our little farm!
We also welcome school groups, classrooms, and youth organizations for educational visits and hands-on field trips. Students can learn about animals, farming, and the outdoors in a fun, engaging environment.

Cows
Cows have four stomach compartments that help them digest grass all day long.
They can recognize familiar faces — even human faces!
Cows spend up to 8 hours a day chewing their cud.
Pigs
Pigs are one of the smartest farm animals and can learn tricks just like dogs.
Despite the saying, pigs actually love being clean.
They use mud to cool off and protect their skin from the sun.
Chickens
Chickens can remember over 100 different faces of people and animals.
A mother hen can talk to her chicks before they hatch.
Chickens don’t need a rooster to lay eggs — roosters are only needed for chicks.
Goats
Goats have rectangular pupils, which help them see better on hills and uneven ground.
They are excellent climbers and love to explore high places.
Goats are very curious and will investigate almost anything!
Sheep
Sheep have excellent memory and can recognize other sheep for years.
Their thick wool helps keep them warm in winter and cool in summer.
Sheep communicate with each other using different bleats and sounds.
Horses
Horses can sleep standing up or lying down.
They have nearly 360-degree vision.
Each horse has a unique whinny, just like a voice.
Ducks
Ducks have waterproof feathers thanks to a special natural oil.
A group of ducks on the ground is called a flock, but in the water it’s a raft!
Ducklings can walk and swim just hours after hatching.
